Usquare.brussels is the transformation of the former gendarmerie barracks in Ixelles into an open, diverse, and multifunctional neighborhood, primarily welcoming the ULB and VUB communities. Based on a detailed analysis of the site's existing features, the renovation project, led by the SAU for the Brussels-Capital Region, aims to enhance the qualities of the existing heritage.

The architects also reused many building elements. The most striking example is the claustra facade, made of Grote Boomse Steen (a longer and wider model than the classic Boomse Steen). These were supplied by a local reclaimed brick dealer, Franck Bricks. Choosing these larger bricks allowed them to design the fence without adding a metal hanger. When the facade was finished, there was a surplus of unused bricks. These were used to create a small outdoor staircase in the garden.

The brick walls play a special role in the project's architecture. They form both a protective screen and a structural element for the design of the house in the middle of the garden. DMOA architects enhanced the impression of garden walls with reclaimed bricks (field oven reclaimed bricks). The solidity of the walls is accentuated by a random bond pattern using a dark thin-bed mortar with recessed joints.
The exterior materiality is extended to the interior of the house through the use of brick slips, which the contractor cut from the same reclaimed bricks.

Building with original facade bricks that are fifty years old or older? It's possible. Franck Bricks, based in Putte, has been reclaiming bricks from old buildings since 1973. It's a true craft still done by hand. And a perfect example of circular construction, for which the company received the Circubuild award in 2020. The company is also gradually making a name for itself abroad. A German architect requested the purchase of the original bricks from Boomse 65 for the construction of a stud farm in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
